What is the warranty on my GPS unit?
All Garmin products are warranted to be free from defects in materials or workmanship fro one year from the date of purchase, not from the date of the products registration. Such repairs or replacement will be made at no charge to the customer for parts of labor, provided that the customer shall be responsible for any transportation cost. This does not cover failures due to abuse, misuse, accident or unauthorizes alterations or repairs.

What solvent should I use to remove the dashboard disc should I decide to?
If you intend to remove the disc thare are great products such as "sticker shock" or "goo-gone" that should help. This products is great at removing left over adhesive without damaging the surface. It is advisable to try the product in a less visble area to test for color damage.

What is the Detour button?
The button is used to calculate a new route to avoid something ahead of you. The unit will create a new route if possible. The unit will take you off the current route and will attempt to get you back on your original route as quickly as possible. If the route you are currently navigating is the the only reasonable option, the unit might not calculate a detour.

How do you stop a route on a nüvi®?
Nuvi Main Menu If you want to stop your current route, return to the Menu page and select Stop in the lower left corner of the screen.



Note: On some older GPS models you may have to press the Menu/Route button to access the ability to stop an active route.

My unit powers on but before it boots up it powers off. Why?
If your GPS unit powers down before it can fully boot up, the battery will need to be charged. Please charge the unit with the vehicle power cable or on a computer for at least three hours. After charging the unit, it should power on and function normally. If the unit will not change in the vehicle, check the fuse in the power cable for the unit and the power outlet in the vehicle.

Can I view a complete route before starting navigation?
Yes, it is possible to view your complete route before navigation to your destination. To do this, follow these steps:
1. From the Where to? amd View Map page, touch Where To?.
2. Select a Category and Sub-category, if necessary.
3. Select a Destination.
4. Touch Go.
5. Touch the green Navigation Bar at the top of the screen that shows your upcoming instructions.
6. Touch Map or Show Map at the bottom of the screen.
Tip: Touch the + (plus) or - (minus) icons to zoom in or out. Touch the map and drag to view different parts of the map.

Note: Some models may require you to use on screen Directional Arrows to move the map.

I bought maps of another country on an SD card. How do I view the maps before I travel there?
Once the SD Card has been inserted into the unit, first make sure that the maps are enabled. To do this please follow the steps below:
1. Touch 'Settings' > 'Map' > 'Map Info'. The 'Map Info'page lists the maps that the unit is currently using. You should see the title of your mapping software on this page.¹
2. Touch 'Back' to get the main menu.
3. Touch 'Where to?'
4. Scroll down and touch 'Browse Map'. On the 'Browse Map' page you will see a map of your current area of the area that the unit last acquired a satellite.
5. Touch on the minus (-) sign to zoom out to see a larger area.
6. Press and hold your finger on the screen and then drag your finger across the screen to 'move' the map.² Continue moving the map to the desired coverage area.
7. Touch on the plus (+) sign until you can see the street level detail.
Please Note:
1. Some units have 'check boxes' next to the map software name, make sure that the boxes are checked. That means that the software is enabled.
2. Some units may require the use of on screen navigational arrows to 'move' the map.

How do I repeat the last navigation instuction on my GPS unit?
It is possible to have the next turn instruction repeated on you unit. If you are navigation to a destination and would like the next turn instruction repeated, touch the Turn In box at the borrom right hand corner of the screen while viewing the map. The unit will repeat the next turn instruction and show a turn preview.

How do I charge my GPS unit?
There are three ways to charge the internal battery in your GPS unit.
1. Use the provided vehicle power cable that came with your GPS unit. The unit will charge while powered on and using the device as well as when the GPS unit is powered off and plugged into a running vehicle.
   
2. Use an AC power adaptor. Some units come with this power cable to plug the GPS unit into a wall outlet allowing the GPS unit to take a charge.
   
3. For most units, the final way of charging the battery is to plug the GPS into a powered on computer with a USB cable2. This way of charging will be a trickle charge and may take longer than the other two options however will still charge the battery. A USB cable will come with some of our GPS unit, for those that don't come with this cable one can either be ordered from the provided link or if you have a USB cable that fits the unit and plugs into your computer this will work as well.

Why is my Map Detail missing on my unit?
If your map detail is missing, then the map information may have been is disabled. To check to see if the mapping has been disabled, follow the steps below:
1. Power the unit ON.
2. From the Where to? and View Map page, touch the Wrench icon (Tools).
3. Touch Map.
4. Touch the Map Info.
5. The unit should display the name of the map that is loaded to the unit. The box in front of the map name should have a checkmark in it. If it does not, touch the box to place a checkmark in it.
6. Touch and hold the back button.

What is the purpose of the screenshot feature on my unit?
The screenshot feature, when enabled on the unit, will allow you to take a picture of the screen of the GPS and save it by touching the camera icon which appears on the screen.

This feature is primarily used for troubleshooting purposes. In the event that you are receiving an error message on the unit you can use the screenshot feature to take a picture of the message.

Which you can later view using the picture viewer on the unit or connect the unit to the computer and email the image to support for further assistance.

To enable this feature follow the below steps.
1. From the main menu press the 'Wrench' icon.¹
2. Touch 'Display'
3. Press 'Off' next to 'Screenshot'
4. Select 'On'
5. Select 'Ok' at the bottom.
Once you have enabled 'Screenshot', you can quickly touch the 'Camera' icon to take a picture of the image on the screen.²

Note:
1. Some units require you to press the 'Settings' icon after the 'Wrench' has been selected.
2. When using the 'Screenshot' feature, some models of units will require you to press the power button instead of touching the camera icon.

How much Internal Memory does my GPS unit have?
The unit's internal memory/storage space varies by model and by the software that is loaded to the unit (ex. firmware, maps, vehicles, voices, etc…).

To view the amount of available free space on the unit, follow these steps:
1. Connect the GPS to your computer with a USB cable.
2. Double-click on My Computer.
3. A Removable Disk Drive will appear titled Garmin or nüvi® depending on the model.
4. Right-Click on the drive and select Properties.
5. A properties window will appear and it will display Free Space.
If you need more space than what is available, an SD (Secure Digital) card may be purchased to extend the memory. The SD card can be used for mapping, music, pictures, and POI files.

How do I correct the message "Can't unlock maps" nüvi® or zümo device?
The "Can't Unlock Maps" message on the device coule be due to the following reasons:
  • The GPS unit is missing the unlock code.
  • Locked supplemental maps has been downloaded on the SD card been used in the GPS device.
  • Locked supplemental maps has been downloaded to the GPS device.

If the GPS unis is missing the unlock code please follow the instructions for "Getting your unlock codes".

Getting your unlock codes:
1. Log into your myGarmin account¹:
https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myGarminHome.faces
2. Look for myMaps.
3. Click on Manage Maps and Downloads.
4. The myMaps page will list all of your registered GPS units.
5. Below the appropriate device, select the "Details" link.
6. Look for the Unlock Code listed on this page.
7. Copy all the unlock codes for your device.
8. Close your internet browser.
9. Right click on your desktop.
10. Click new, and then click Text Document.
11. Click on the newly created Text Document icon from the desktop.
12. Paste your unlock codes into the document.
13. Click File and Save as.
14. Change the file name to gmapprom.unl
15. Change the “Save as type” to "All files"
16. Close the document
17. You should see the file gmapprom.unl on your desktop
18. Right click on the gmapprom.unl file and then click copy.
19. Plug your Garmin device in and then click Computer/My Computer.
20. Click on the 'nüvi (drive letter:)'²
21. Right click on the Garmin folder and click Paste.
22. Safely disconnect your Garmin device from the computer.
If the locked supplemental maps has been downloaded on the SD card and is used in the GPS device then:
1. Remove the SD card from your Garmin device and restart the device to determine if you are still getting the "Can't Unlock Maps" message.
2. Before using any supplemental locked Garmin Mapping products, ensure that the maps are unlocked to that specific unit.
If the locked supplemental maps has been downloaded on the GPS device then follow the instuctions for "Removing Supplemental Maps".

Removing Supplemental Maps:
1. Plug your Garmin device to the USB port.
2. Double-Click on My Computer located on the desktop.
3. Double-Click on the Garmin/nüvi® device
4. Double-Click on the Garmin folder.
5. Located the file "gmapsupp.img" and delete it.
6. Safely disconnect your Garmin device from the computer.
Notation:
1. Must register the Garmin device to veiw the Unlock Code
2. In My Computer, some units may be labeled 'garmin (drive letter:)'

How do the routing options for Faster Time, Shorter Distance, and Off Road work on my GPS?
When using 'Shorter Distance', the device creates a route that is the shortest driving distance between two points.

When using 'Faster Time', the device uses information including posted speed limits to create a route that may be longer in distance but shorter in travel time.

Some devices also have an 'Off Road' routing option. This will create a straight line route between the current position and the destination.

What is Safe Mode?
While Safe Mode is activated, the units functionality is limited while the vehicle is in motion. To disable Safe Mode on your unit follow the steps below:
1. Touch Settings
2. Touch System*
3. From this menu Safe Mode can be toggled ON or OFF
Note: On some models Safe mode is listed under Security instead of System

Can I zoom in or out on the Map View screen?
To zoom in and out while on the Map View screen, use the plus (+) and minus (-) icons. These icons are located directly across from each other in the upper left and right corners of the screen. The plus (+) icon zooms in and increases the level of detail, while the minus (-) icon zooms out and decreases the level of detail.

How close do I have to be to a proximity point before my nüvi will alert me?
While navigating, the proximity point will need to be within 30 meters of the route, regardless of the distance set in the POI Loader, to trigger an alert. This helps to reduce false alerts that can occur if you are traveling on a road close to a proximity point but is not affected by the alert.

What is the largest SD card that my nüvi® can use?
If your nüvi® has the latest version of operating software, you can use the following maximum SD card size:
  • nüvi® 2xx: 4GB
  • nüvi® 3xx: 2GB
  • nüvi® 6xx: 2GB
  • nüvi® 7xx: 4GB
  • nüvi® 8xx: 4GB

The nüvi® units are compatible with both normal Secure Digital (SD) data card and Secure Digital High Capcity (SDHC) data cards.

How do I find Parks on my nüvi®?
To locate parks on your nüvi® please follow the steps below:
1. On the 'Main Menu' touch 'Where To?'
2. Touch 'Points of Interest' or some models, 'Food, Lodging...'
3. Touch the 'Attractiions' icon
4. Touch the 'Park/Garden' icon
*Note: This step is not necessary for the nüvi® 3xx series

How do I browse map on my nüvi®?
There are two ways to browse the map on the nüvi®:

The first way is:
1. Power the unit ON.
2. From the Where to? and View Map page, touch View Map.
3. Touch the screen on the map.
4. The map will change to a 2D view.
5. Touch and drag your finger on the screen in any direction to move the map to view other locations.
A second way to browse the map is:
1. Power the unit ON.
2. From the Where to? and View Map page, touch Where to?.
3. Touch the down arrow in the bottom right corner until you see Browse Map.
4. Touch Browse Map.
5. Touch and drag your finger on the screen in any direction to move the map to view other locations.
*Note: To view a larger area on the map, touch the (-) minus sign in the upper left corner to zoom out. This will allow you to move the map greater distances faster. Touch the (+) plus sign to zoom back in on the map.

How many Favorites can I save on my nüvi®?
Most nüvi® units can store up to 500 Favorites. However the nüvi® 5000 can hold 3000 Favorites and the 2x5 series can hold 1000 Favorites.

Do I have to buy an SD memory card from Garmin for my nüvi®?
No, the nüvi® will accept almost all standard SD (Secure Digital) memory cards, including SDHC types. The SD card is not proprietary, and can be purchased at any number of retailers.

Can I replace the battery in my nüvi®?
The nüvi® series does not have a user replaceable batterty with a few exceptions. THe exceptions include the nüvi® 8xx and the nüvi® 900T. Both of these units to have a replaceable lithuim-ion battery. The battery can be purchased on our website from the following link:

Why is the distance listed next to my 'Favorites' and 'Recently Found' locations wrong on the nüvi®?
The distance listed to the right of the locations is a straight line route. So it is displaying an estimated distance in a straight line from where you are to the destination selected. If you want the actual distance you will be traveling, simply press Go. Once you push Go, the unit calculates the route and determines which roads you will be taking to get to the destination. After that is completed you should be on the Map screen and in the bottom left cornew you will see Arrival. You should not see a mileage reading in the top right corner next to the checkered flag. The distance listed there is the actualy distance you will be traveling.

Will any USB cable work with my nüvi®?
The nüvi® product line uses a mini-USB to standard USB cable for connecting the nüvi® to your computer. The end that connects to the nüvi® is called a mini-USB connector and the standard USB connector would then connect to your computer.

Garmin has a USB cable (Part number 010-10723-01) that comes with most units or can be purchased as an additional accessory at the Online Garmin Store.

Why doesn't my nüvi® speak street names when navigating?
Farmin automotive GPS devices that have text to speech (speak street names) are also loaded with pre-recorded voices that do not speak street names (example: "Turn Right in 500 feet"). If one of these pre-recorded voices has been selected, the voice prompts will not speak street names.

To change the voice prompt to spoken street names:
1. Touch Tools (Wrench icon) from the Main Menu.
2. Touch Settings.
3. Select Language or Locale.
4. Touch the Voice language option.
5. Select a voice option that includes a person's name (ex. Emily) or TTS. Options without a name of the TTS label will say the distance until the next turn, but will not include the street name.
6. Select OK.
The device should now speak street names.

*Note: The Setting option is not required on all nüvi® units.

Can I use an external antenna with my nüvi®?
Most of the nüvi® units can use an external antenna. The most commonly used external antenna is the GA 25MCX low profile remote GPS antenna (Part Number 010-10702-00). The GA 25MCX antenna can be used with all nüvi® models except the nüvi® 2xx series.

If I miss a turn, will the nüvi® give me new directions?
If a turn is missed, the nüvi® will recalculate the route and give you new directions to your destination.

How do I change my Home address on my nüvi®?
To change the Home address on your nüvi® follow the steps below:
1. From the Where to? and View Map page, touch Where to?.
2. Touch Favorites.
3. Touch Home.
4. Touch Edit.
5. Touch Delete.
6. A message will display, Delete this Favorite?.
7. Touch Yes.
8. Touch Back.
9. Touch Go Home.
10. Enter your new home address.
Note: Some models may require touching My Locations before touching Favorites.

What is the slot on the side of the nüvi® for?
The slot on the side of the nüvi® is used for an SD card. SD stands for Secure Digital which is a commonly used memory card format. SD cards come in various sizes and are usually sold as either a micro(small)SD or regular SD cards(also includes SDHC). Most nüvi® models accept a regular SD card with the exceptions of the nüvi® 8xx series which will only accept a microSD card.

An SD card is often used with a Garmin GPS unit to store additional maps, MP3 files*, and JPEG picture files.

*Not all nüvi®'s have the capability to play MP3 files.

Why won't my nüvi® 2xx, 6xx, or 7xx acquire satellite signal?
If your nüvi is no longer acquiring satellites please read the article linked below to ensure that this is not being caused by something in your environment:

Why won't my unit acquire satellites?

If after reading the above article your unit is still having problems, please ensure that your unit's software is up to date. You can do this by using our WebUpdater® program.

If you have tried all of the above suggestions and your unit is still not acquiring satellites, you can perform a master reset by doing the following:

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

Follow the steps below to perform a master reset on the nüvi® 2xx, 6xx, or 7xx:
1. Turn the device OFF.
2. Place your fingertip or the eraser end of a pencil in the bottom right corner of the touchscreen
3. While pressing down on the screen, power ON the unit and continue pressing on the screen. A message displays to confirm if you really want to delete all user data?
4. Touch Yes.
5. The unit will now restart.
6. Follow the onscreen prompts to set up the nüvi®.
Once the reset is complete, please place your unit in an area with clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites. If you are still having issues please contact product support at (603) 9285 8062.

How do I set my location somewhere else on my nüvi® 2xx, 7xx, 5xx, 8xx, or 5000?
To set your location at a new position on the map, please follow the steps below:
1. From the Where to? View Map page, touch the wrench icon.
2. Touch Settings.
3. Touch System.
4. Touch the box under or adjacent to GPS Simulator.
5. Select On and touch OK.
6. Touch and Hold back to return to the Where to? View Map page.
7. Touch View Map.
8. Touch the mapping screen.
9. Touch the map and drag your finger to move the map.
10. Touch the map and an arrow appears on the map.
11. Touch Set Location once the desired location has been found on the map./td>
Once the new position is set, you will be able to view the mapping for the area and search for POIs.

Hint:
  • Touch the + and - to zoom in and out.
  • Touch Save to save the location the arrow is pointing to.
  • Touch Go! to simulate driving to the location.

How do I change the brightness of the screen on my nüvi® 2xx, 7xx, 5xx, 8xx, or 5000?
To adjust the brightness of the screen on the nüvi® 2xx, 7xx, 5xx, 8xx, or 5000, please follow the steps below:
1. Power the unit on.
2. From the 'Where to' and 'View Map' page, touch Tools (Wrench icon).
3. Touch Settings.
4. Touch Display.
5. Touch the blue rectangle labeled Change...*
6. Touch the Plus (+) sign to Increase the brightness. Touch the Minus (-) sign to Decrease the brightness.
7. The current brightness will be displayed as a percent in the middle of the screen.
8. Touch OK.
Your brightness has now sucessfully been changed.

Note: The nüvi® 2xx will show a Percentage instead of Change.

What is the "Where am I?" feature?
"Where am I?" is a feature available in some of the nüvi® models. To access this feature, ensure that your unit has acquired satellites and follow the steps below:
1. From the main menu, touch Tools (Wrench icon).
2. Touch "Where am I?".
After pressing "Where am I?", the screen will display your current latitude, longitude and GPS elevation. It will also display the nearest address and intersection. In addition, you can search for a neearby fuel stations, hospitals, police stations, or save your current location.

How do I enter coordinates?
To enter coordinates on your unit:
1. From the Main menu, touch Where to?.
2. Touch the down arrow in the bottom right corner until the Coordinates icon displays.
3. Touch Coordinates.
4. Enter the coordinates and touch Next.
5. Touch Save to add the location to your Favorites.
6. Touch Go to navigate to the coordinates.
